THREATENED SPECIES OF NSW

The North-east of NSW is a highly diverse region which supports a huge variety of animals and plants of which over 370 species, populations and ecological communities are in decline or under threat of extinction, according to the NPWS.
The main reason for this being that it is a highly modified landscape which has been affected by human activity through urban & rural development, landclearing, forestry, fire/burning off,  firewood collection,  clearing of fallen branches, leaf litter and understorey plants from beneath trees, debris, alteration of natural flow regimes of rivers, streams floodplains & wetlands, pollution of creeks and the accumulation of agricultural herbicide and pesticide residues and the introduction of invasive plants including exotic vines, scramblers, lantana & pasture grasses.

Other Key Threatening processes include:

Bushrock removal, Beak & Feather disease in parrots, Chytrid in Frogs, Phytophthora infection in plants, Entanglement in fences/nets etc, Climate Change, grazing/invasion by ferral rabbits, goats, honeybees, canetoads, rats, cats & foxes,
The result being the loss of habitat which has put over 118  of our native animals species under etreme stress.
We are all now faced with saving these species from extinction.

Some of the actions we can undertake include:

Protect existing remaining rainforests and planting more endemic (local) plants including native fruit bearing trees as food trees, protect wetlands, woodlands and hollow bearing trees, retain large dead trees & fallen branches retention and enhancement of wildlife corridors, control and restrain dogs and cats, correct fire management, weed and pollution control,
revegetate the riparian zones adjacent to creek and drainage lines, feral animal control, avoid using pesticides and herbicides especially near watercourses, provide nestboxes in areas where natural tree hollows are scarce, exclude stock from creeks replace lawns with our beautiful native grasses-they are far prettier and lower in maintenance encourage and educate newcomers and your neighbours, family and friends to build farm friendly fencing.
