Red Kangaroo

Red to blue grey above, distinctly white below but may vary from place to place. Adults distinguished from other kangaroos by white underparts, black and white patch at side of muzzle and broad white stripe from corner of mouth, to base of ear.

Average weight of males are 66 kg females 27kg both can however reach much greater weight.

Sexual maturity is reached at 24 months for males 15-20 months for females. Interesting to note that in poor conditions sexual maturity may be delayed.

This species live in large mobs semi-nomadic depending on food viability. Being mostly nocturnal they feed from dusk till dawn.

Major threats

During dry times the impact on crops and water sources becomes significant bringing them in direct competition with stock. Shooting, entanglement, motor vehicle collisions and habitat loss are all major threats.
