ABOUT WIRES

WIRES (The NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc) was established in 1985, since then branches have been established covering most of NSW. It is the largest wildliferescue and care organisation in Australia.

Belonging to such a large state wide organisation, gives the members and carers the opportunity to learn and share information on a broader scale.

All rescue and emergency calls made to WIRES are listed in a state wide data base. From the time an animal is taken in to care, it is tracked via this data base. Information on all aspects of the animal whilst it is in care is entered in to the data base including why did it come in to care, veterinary treatment, all aspects of its time in care, and finally the fate of the animal.

Having this information available is a valuable resource. It gives us information as to why do native animals come in to care, can something be done in particular areas to rectify a problem.

From a caring aspect, carers have information available on who to contact for specific animal problems, aspects of caring, not only from their local branch, but across the state. This is vitally important if animal caring is to move forward, information need to be shared, learn of new research and put it in to practice.

All WIRES carers undertake intensive training in native animal care, many specialising in specific species.

After treatment - often involving intensive veterinary care nursing and rehabilitation by the rescuers and carers - animals are returned to the wild, with as little human intervention as possible.

WIRES is a non-profit, non-political organisation, where animal welfare always comes first. All carers are voluntary, and give their time and emotions free of charge.

The welfare of our native animals is a responsibility that should be of concern to all Australians.

We rely on public donations which are tax deductible when $2.00 and over. You will contribute by enabling us to carry on with our rehabilitation work, so please give generously. You will be issued with a tax deductible receipt.

Unknown Faces
By Frederick Wallace Ulyatt

In the places no one goes
Reside small faces no one knows
But if you think about them long and kind
You may just glimpse them in your mind

The creatures of the night and day
Seek their refuge without delay
In the trees and under the ground
Away from man they leap and bound.

Their homes abate before the saw
Whilst they flee in all their awe
Their dens but tombs beneath the treads
Of machines that render wood to shreds.

Their cries and shrieks go unheard
For those in power think absurd
The notion creatures play a vital role
Let alone they possess a soul

Innocent of any crime or deed
They disappear to sate man’s greed
As progress continues unabated
For man will never be truly sated.

In the spaces that are left behind
There is no life for you to find
Just a silent hollow vacant place
With neither soul nor furry face.

Once an Eden a place of bliss
Now a lonely lifeless abyss
Gone the joy of nature’s wonder
Now silent with a mother’s anger.

One day we will have to face our crime
When we ourselves run out of time
And Mother Nature shows her wrath
By wiping us slowly from this earth.

To change the future for we and they
We must stand our ground without delay
To stop the machines which do this deed
In service of those who live by greed.

Take the time to consider these words
We creatures who live by swords
What war do we consider won
When these creatures are all gone.
